Criminal defence in Trinidad.

From summary offences to indictable matters before the High Court.

Being charged with a criminal offence — or being asked to attend a police station for questioning — is a moment that requires immediate, clear-headed advice. The decisions made in the first hours and days of a criminal matter shape everything that follows.

We represent clients in criminal proceedings across T&T, from summary offences before the Magistrates’ Court to indictable matters before the High Court.

02Approach

Our approach.

Criminal matters are time-sensitive. The right to silence, the right to legal representation and the right to be informed of the charges against you are real rights — but they only work if exercised promptly and correctly. Our first conversation with a client charged with an offence is about what they should do in the next twenty-four hours.

We are direct about likely outcomes. The criminal justice system is not a place for false reassurance. Clients deserve to know what they are facing and to make informed decisions about how to plead and how to proceed.

03Common Questions

Common questions.

What should I do if I am asked to attend a police station?

Contact a lawyer before attending if at all possible. You have the right to legal representation during police questioning. We can attend with you, advise you on which questions to answer, and protect your interests during the interview.

How do bail applications work in T&T?

Most offences are bailable, meaning the Judicial Officer can grant bail pending trial. The decision considers the seriousness of the offence, the strength of the evidence, the accused’s ties to the community and the risk of absconding. Some offences carry a presumption against bail; for these, the application is more complex.

Will my matter be heard quickly?

Magistrates’ Court matters move faster than indictable matters. A summary offence may resolve in months. Indictable matters often take one to three years to reach trial.

Can I get legal aid for a criminal matter?

The Legal Aid and Advisory Authority provides representation in qualifying matters for clients who meet financial criteria.
